Health / Medical
A Group Benefits Plan (Group Health Insurance) is an insurance plan that provides healthcare coverage to a select group of people. Group health insurance plans are one of the major benefits offered by many employers. These plans are generally uniform in nature, offering the same benefits (or benefit options) to all employees or members of the group.
Because the risk is spread over the entire group, rather than one person, Group Health Insurance plans usually cost less for participants than individual plans with the same benefits. If the cost of premiums is borne by the Employer or Organization, then they are fully deductible, while any benefit received by group members (employees) is tax free.
Dental & Vision
Dental insurance is essentially health insurance for your teeth. Dental HMOs are most affordable, but usually have fewer participating dentists. In contrast, Dental PPOs cost more, but have more participating dentists and come with the option of going out-of-network. Dental indemnity plans cost the most, but also offer the most freedom of choice. Individual indemnity coverage may be hard to find.
Dental discount plans are NOT insurance and not currently regulated. The burden is on the buyer to ensure these plans are reputable and to understand how they can be used. Ultimately, dental discount plans are just a way to buy into a network to the lower negotiated rates as opposed to full retail rates if you were to just walk-in off the streets.
Life
Life insurance offered by an employer or large-scale entity (i.e. association or labor organization) to its workers or members. Group life insurance is typically offered as a piece of a larger employer or membership benefit package.
By purchasing coverage through a provider on a "wholesale" basis for its members, the coverage costs each individual worker/member much less than if they had to purchase an individual policy. Those receiving coverage may not have to pay anything "out of pocket" for policy benefits or they may elect to have their portion of the premium payment deducted from their paycheck.
